Rhinoplasty, otherwise referred to as a nose job, is basically a cosmetic plastic surgery method for transforming and restructuring the nasal tip. There are basically two kinds of cosmetic plastic surgery used in rhinoplasty, reconstructive surgery, which only restores the shape and functions of the normal nose and cosmetic plastic surgery, which alter the entire look of the normal nose. The reconstructive rhinoplasty can be undertaken to correct birth defects, injury or deformities resulting in the nasal tip not conforming to the rest of the face. This kind of rhinoplasty is used for the fixing of birth defects, repairing nasal polyps, consolidating fractures or reformatting the nasal tip due to ageing or facial trauma. Fixing the septum

A septum is a cartilage separating the nostrils. It helps prevent the nostrils from obstructing each other. When the septum develops abnormalities, it can result in breathing difficulty and even result in a nose that does not meet the patient's needs. In order to solve these problems, rhinoplasty surgery is performed to change or rebuild the septum.

Rhinoplasty is often combined with other aesthetic procedures such as an implant to improve the shape of the nasal tip. Many people with severe birth defects are able to get this procedure to reshape their nose, giving it a better shape than it had before birth. Improving the shape of a birth defect through rhinoplasty is sometimes the only option available to a patient. The patient may also want to get rid of signs of excessive scarring, which can be achieved by rhinoplasty.

Surgeries for different types of noses

Separate surgeries are performed for those with a flat nose and one that deviates far away from the nasal center. For example, those with a deviated septum may require septoplasty surgery to correct the deviation. Common areas for rhinoplasty surgeries are the maxillary sinus, the uvula, the frontal region, and the midface.

The recovery period

Following rhinoplasty surgery, there will be some swelling and bruising. This usually lasts one week, although the degree of swelling and bruising will vary from patient to patient. It is important to pay careful attention to any strange redness or tenderness in the area around the eyes or nose, as this could be a sign of a further complication. If there is any pain or discomfort in these areas following the surgery, talk to your doctor immediately. Some people experience slight dizziness or light-headedness after the operation, which should subside fairly quickly.

Summing up

Rhinoplasty can be done as an open rhinoplasty, where the incision is made in the nostrils and cut away, or as a closed rhinoplasty in which the incision is made in the nasal tip but the eyelids are closed. Most cosmetic surgeons prefer to perform open rhinoplasty surgery, as it requires less suturing and healing. The incisions in a closed rhinoplasty are usually covered with a soft plastic shield that stays in place for several weeks.
