A breast implant is basically a prosthetic device used to alter the size, shape, and form of a woman's breast. In plastic surgery, breast enhancements can be put in to restore an older, less than perfect looking breast to the same level as younger, more desirable ones. Women who choose to have these enhancements put in may do so for many different reasons, such as because their breast size is too small, or perhaps they are simply not happy with the shape or overall size of their breasts.
There will be multiple visits to the physician's office before any breast enhancement procedure takes place. Visits to the doctor's office usually consist of a consultation, x-rays, and an assessment of the breast tissue. During the first visit, the patient will be given an exam and asked questions regarding her medical history. The doctor will take note of any medications that she is currently taking, any existing conditions, as well as her overall health. After the initial exam has been completed, the patient will be scheduled for a consultation with a plastic surgeon. During this time, the surgeon will discuss with the patient what techniques will be most suitable for the desired results, as well as what types of surgical garments will be worn during the procedure. Another less invasive option is referred to as "fat transfer." A skilled plastic surgeon can transfer unwanted fat from one part of the body to another. For example, if the patient has breasts that are too large in size, they may choose to have excess fat removed from one side of their body and transferred to the other. Fat transfer can also be done if one has too small breasts. In this case, the surgeon will make small incisions in the armpit or around the breasts, and the fat will then be extracted and transferred to the desired location on the patient's body.
Implant placement is another important factor in breast augmentation. The two types of implants that can be used are the submuscular or paravertebral, which is located inside the chest wall, and the inflatable or paraurethral, which is placed on top of the breast tissue. Submuscular implants are usually used when the patient desires a larger bust, whereas the paravertebral is used if the patient wants a firmer, more youthful look. Paraurethral placement results in a more permanent change in the shape of the breasts.
Having larger breasts is something that many women dream of, but some find that the physical changes it requires making breast augmentation not an option for them. If you have decided that breast surgery is not an option for you, there are other options that you might want to try before making a drastic change to your appearance.
